For nearly 150 years, Saint Francis of Assisi School has served the Louisville community by providing a quality Catholic elementary and middle school education, engaging generations of students and their families in a full and rich academic and extracurricular experience.
SFA parish opened its first school in 1886 under the auspices of the Bishop of Louisville and Rev. B. H. Westerman. The Mercy Sisters taught the first classes of farm children for the next 25 years. In 1911, at the request of the Rev. Henry Rothheut, the Community of Ursuline Sisters, located on Lexington Road, began staffing the school. By 1918, SFA grew to 150 students in grades 1-8, with one teacher for each grade.
On January 12, 1925, the SFA community broke ground on a new school building to accommodate its significant growth and success. The project was completed on July 4, 1926, resulting in the handsome structure we know today. The building is renovated regularly to meet current programming needs.
